Dacelo is on the Aboriginal land of the Walbanga people of the Yuin nation. We pay our respects to past and present Aboriginal custodians. We welcome you to do so as you pass onto the land.

Ok so this is a rural bush block that we call Dacelo. Our name for this place arose simply because it felt rude to keep saying “our block”. We are going to “our block”. But yes we are “blockies” – the rural term for city people who buy small bits of rural land. Dacelo is Aboriginal land and then became part of a large pasture holding for mostly cows. Then it was subdivided to “concessional allotments” for the farmer’s children (so they could stay nearby). We bought this “allotment” bit in 2005.

But naming a property was surprisingly more challenging than we imagined. We once even held a naming event, the event came and went without “the block” getting a name. Eventually we figured out the most constant thing about the place was the sound of Kookaburras – always, every time we were here, every visit. So please listen and enjoy that. The scientific name for a kookaburra is: Dacelo novaeguineae. Hence the name. We also like it as it has our name letters in it 10 times. Happy to discuss how we got to that figure.

So Dacelo is 20 acres (7.9ha), with a permanent running creek intersecting the entire property. We are trying to “speed up” the natural regeneration by planting endemic species – eucalyptus elata, dives and radiate (all “peppermints”).

To date we have planted 500 blackwood, random bursaria and 200+ eucalyptus.

We love walking around and the place has many interesting spots. However on this occasion we ask you to stay within the designated event areas – camping and venue.
